Having never played any of the previous games as I've an aversion to all that Dungeons & Dragons crap, I found myself being swayed by the videos on You Tube for it that seemed to back up the countless
reviewers saying even if you've hated this sort of game before you will be won over by it.

But the guys in GAME promised that I could return it with my money back if I thought it sucked, which I can't remember them doing EVER with a PC game before, they were that confident. So, I got it - and was easily won over in the first hour. It's a bargain for the price they charged for an astonishing piece of work.

How did they manage to cram so much detail into a game? It would take you years to play through all the different combinations of race, skills, regions, weapons, spells and so on the game has to offer.

The choices are bewildering, but wonderful - something for absolutely everyone in the game. Although there's a main quest, there's hundreds of side quests (along with side quests to the side quests!) and the game leaves it up to you what you want to do.

You can go to one city & be a criminal, in another holding up the law eliminating local bandits. Go to one place on an mission, before you know it you've got yourself mixed up in another three at the same time. Going there and back again are countless plants, objects and creatures all of which can be used in some shape or form(assuming the creatures don't kill you first).

It's the scenery that makes it that bit special, with realistic weather effects on top.

Here's some screenshots from my game so far just to let you all see how mouthwatering it is.

I do wub it!!! <3

My boyfriend got this game and was lost to humanity for about three days before he resurfaced for air XD

He never told me anything about it (I never asked, being that I was too busy watching Harry Potter like crazy, since DHp2 and Skyrim released the same day...) but now I really wanna play...

Simmers will love this, you say?

It's like World Adventures except far more deadly!

You can buy a home in each of the main cities as a base once you have enough money, which you will need to keep all your junk in. You can't keep hoping to push up your stamina so you can carry more forever. I hate it when you raid a place and find that the armour and weapons you needed just to complete it means you can't take home even a fraction of the loot!

Dodgy

Some of the old Elder Scrolls players have complained about this part saying it's like the Sims - quite right too! It's good that you can have a place to come "home" to after a quest with mementos of all your adventures and triumphs - I'm sad like that!

Blush

Have been given a Housecarl, Livia, in Whiterun - but I don't want her to get killed so I've told her to stay behind and await instructions. I've a feeling that having companions and followers will be required more during the tougher assignments so I'm keeping her in reserve until that time. She'll be hanging around the Jarl's "big house on the hill" until I can afford to buy a home (very disappointed that there's nowhere in Whiterun to provide a mortgage for first time buyers, guess Skyrim's banks all got credit crunched as well!).

Although it's a single player game, I think people will do better if they play it together, as the amount of stuff you have to learn is daunting, and having someone with you to advise especially in the early part of the game saves time (although the game has an excellent built in help).

One tip I would give is learn how to make restoring health and stamina potions quickly, you will need them badly in the early days when you are fighting opponents often far better armed and skilled than you. Also those frostbite spiders are annoying, but their poison put on your weapons can give you an edge in the early days, especially if you get attacked by a group of bandits (advice there is fighting retreat with bow and arrow until you've narrowed down the odds to one on one, use your shout if they get too close to give yourself more time to run).

Making potions is a good way to make money in the early days as well. Just harvest everything you can (mushrooms, wildflowers, bugs, ores - see, just like Sims!), get to the nearest Alchemy lab, make as many as possible (preferably with three ingredients if you know successful recipes for them) and sell off all those ones that restore health, stamina or magic for only a limited time like 20 seconds (more trouble than they're worth if you ask me).

Just now I'm contenting myself to flitting between Whiterun and Morthal and going through the list of Things To Do I've somehow accumulated. Ended up in Morthal during that Gray Manes quest en route to release their brother kept prisoner for fighting with the rebels. Before I knew what had happened, I was tasked with taking a letter back to Whiterun and solving a murder mystery by the local yokels. Hope old Gray Mane likes prison stale bread and water as that's going to stay his diet for a while longer!

Tongue

Crapped myself when a Flame Atronach appeared out of nowhere on the road back to Morthal and hit me with two firebolts before I knew what was happening, but firebolts are slow enough to dodge from the same distance you can fire off a few poisoned arrows to take it out, wait for the death explosion, and then grab yourself some free Flame Salts and booty - before running like your backside's on fire from the bear alerted to your presence by the explosion! 'Exit, pursued by a bear' indeed!

Big Grin
Im either getting Skyrim or uncharted 3 for christmas. Most likely Uncharteed 3 though.

Cororon

It DOES look good, but I'm not into fighting games. Do you have to play with the keyboard or can you use a gamepad? I hate using keyboards for gaming. Confused I think I will look the game up on Youtube to see if it's something for me. But as you know, one game can be gold for some people or a rumpaklimp for others. Shy
It seems so awesome!!! But I agree with Cororon. I HATE playing with the keyboard. That's what made the sims and I click! I just played with the mouse Big Grin

As far as I know you can map it to a gamepad's controls. The keyboard layout has been criticised because the game was made especially for consoles, but with any game you buy - you have to configure the keys to suit yourself.

As for the fighting side, it all depends how you want to play the game. If you skill up on the sneaking options you can keep it to a minimum.

Unless some scaly git of a dragon comes along trying to burn Morthal to a crisp, then it's time to get the bow out and join in the townsfolk in a merry game of shoot the dragon and get yourself some lovely dragon harvestibles to sell back in Whiterim for a tidy profit!

Burn baby burn - it's Dragon Steaks down at the Moorside Inn tonight!

Remember that the game is a free-for-all in terms of what you want to do. There's nothing to stop you saying "sod the quest, I don't care if I'm Dragonborn" and pick and choose what you want to go for. That's what's so brilliant about it. There isn't just one story, but
hundreds of stories in the game that have nothing at all to do with the
"Big Quest".

"You are the Dragonborn! You are the Chosen One!"

"Sorry grandad, but the dragons can go fry the whole lot of you to a crisp for all I care! Stuff your prophecies, stuff your silly civil war, I'm going adventuring, playing with my alchemy set and the Skyforge, making a mountain of loot and whatever else I want."

"But, but, but..."

"You want a Chosen One, go hire Harry Potter, he's unemployed now he's killed Voldermort, is too old to get back into Hogwarts!"

Tongue

You don't have to join either of the two civil war factions in Skyrim - the Imperials in charge who want to make Skyrim to be a more central part of the Tamriel empire, and the nationalist Stormcloaks that want Skyrim to be independent - nor get involved in the Companions, Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild or any of the many other factions in the game - it's all entirely up to you.

(Currently I'm in the huff with the Dark Brotherhood, one of them tried to assassinate me - and failed! - because someone unknown is trying to kill me, so might go and find them eventually and see if there's some way I can go and screw up their lives for revenge!)

The best way to avoid combat is to skill and swot up on the alchemy and archery, so if you have no choice you can make it a completely one sided contest. There's nothing funnier than getting perched up on some high ground above some utterly impenetrable fortress with a stack of arrows. If you burrow yourself into a nice little niche in the rocks, you can have a merry time picking the entire garrison off, and all their fancy swords and armour won't save them.

Even better if it is a witches coven in the mountains. I HATE witches! They can shoot fireballs at you and if there's three of them doing so, you're barbequed in next to no time. But attack them at night, and once you shoot one of them while hidden up high, they all start glowing bright blue firing up their magic ready to fire damage spells, and thank you very much for making yourselves excellent targets for me up here in the dark of the rocks, now a nice little paralysis poison arrow for your big Hagraven leader before she magics some nasties to fight me with, and a few arrows later it's all over and time to loot your grubby corpses and smelly campsite!

(Paralysis potion rocks! So easy to make, and no matter how tough the baddie, down they go long enough for you to put them out of the game)

Big Grin

Coolest thing that's happened in the game so far was over at Dragon Bridge up in the north-west part of Skyrim (the only part of the Haafinger region I like).

That bridge is pretty cool, but what's way cooler is who sometimes crosses it at night.

My jaw dropped when I saw it gallop by - a headless horseman ghost! Chased after it, watched it cross over the bridge, stop a bit further down the road, and after a while just vanished.

I LOVE THIS GAME!

Cororon

You're very passionated about the game Minty. Tongue That ghost look mysterious and now you made me interested in finding out why he is there and if he want something. Confused I'm not sure if my computer is good enough for Skyrim, but I might buy it when I have bought the new computer I'm saving for. Then Skyrim will be sold for less too, I hope. Tongue
I think I just found the game for my Christmas list.
So I talked to my boyfriend about it and (poor him, Im such a horrible girlfriend XD) he's trying to tell me to give him my PC specs and he'll tell me if my comp can handle it, and Im like, "Well, my mom's an IT tech, so she can do it for me. She'll rebuild my PC for me too, if need be." And he's like, "Well, I doubt she'd do it, because you need a graphics card for the game, and those are expensiv-" "I already have one." "You do?" "The Sims 3 runs on higher specs than you'd think."

He's so dumb sometimes, bless his soul XD I want the game now, and I feel like Im taking over everything, and soon I'll know more than he does about, well, everything. XD

I have to help him study for math tests -__-

He tells me he wants to learn an instrument. "Which one?" "The drums." "...dont ever tell a musician you want to learn an instrument and you pick 'the drums'." "Why not?" "That doesnt count." "Ohh..." "*facepalm*"

And now the thing over Skyrim and my pc specs and the fact that I have an amazingly great graphics card because my mom has hookups and he thinks my computer cant handle it XD

Poor boy!
