Which Sims version do you recommend?

Hi. I've never played Sims before, but I want to. Some of the things I've read about Sims 3, made me think maybe I should go with Sims 2. I'm wondering what are the big differences between them? I think I would really enjoy the house building part which it sounds to me like Sims 2 lets you build houses and neighborhoods. At the same time, I don't see myself be a hardcore gamer, so the auto play thing seems like it might be good. Is that just in Sims 3? I'm so confused! I'd welcome any thoughts or advice. P.S.
