I downloaded some content
and that makes my game crash?

Do you have all the latest patches? Is the content compatible with your EP's/SP's? Could be any number of things. But these are what come to mind right away.

where do i put them?
In your EA > Sims2 >Downloads folder.
You might need to make the Downloads folder. I had to, but sometimes when you download CC it automatically makes one. If not, just do "New Folder" and name it Downloads.

Just a tip, make sure you name the folder 'Downloads' with a capital D, otherwise it wont work.
What kind of content are you looking for that isn't appearing? It could be because it needed a mesh and you haven't downloaded it.
where do i download mesh?
There should be a link to it wherever you downloaded it from. Sometimes you have to look really closely though, it can be easy to miss a mesh link.
what happens if my folders are zipped?
Then youll need a program that can Unzip them.
Items won't show up until they've been Unzipped, and if they require a mess but you don't have it.
Some stuff the Mesh comes included, or if it's just a recolor of an item already in the game, you might only need to unzip the item.
You can download free versions of WinZip and 7-Zip (I use 7-Zip) to help with unzipping items.
