Just to get the drive fixed shouldn't cost too much. Just take it up to a Beast Buy or a Circuit City, I think they do repairs like that.

my mom says it will cost about $50 and we are tight on cash right now( my bother is in college, its $17,000)

Offer to do some chores for some neighbors.
It's simple, and you can ask for like 10 bucks, help five people and get the money
Offer to help clean rain gutters, mow lawns, shovel snow ... whatever! lol
Offer to clean dishes, do laundry ... walk dogs ... xD

Fifty bucks isn't that much.
Sell some stuff, cut grass...do what Majick said.
I am a girl, and I'm thinking of going house to house shoveling snow. I did before...people are uncomfy with the fact of a girl doing it...so is my mom.
