I just heard a theory that on December 22nd, the planet will be emptied of human population and will be free for aliens to use. That was their plan all along! They didn't want to invade us, they were just waiting for an empty planet to settle on.
And actually, I lie, it wasn't really a 'theory' so much. It was actually in an old game, and in the game aliens took over the empty planet as the new population on December 22nd, 2012.
