The new games released by Maxis are at the cutting edge of graphic technology, games that only the more advanced computers can handle. While this may be aesthetically pleasing, this is the cause of more harm than good.
- Fewer computers can aptly handle the graphics. Thereby ostracizing a good portion of the market.
- What computers that can handle the graphics still face lag and other errors.
- It causes most additions to content to be cut back upon.
I honestly thing that a good game would be the following. As of now I call it the Sims X. It is a game that has the simple 2D graphics of the original Sims. However, it comes will all the content that is provided in the Sims 2 and 3, and then some. What this game lacks in graphics, it makes up in content.
The Sims X has the following features:
- Seamless Aging -- Aging is no longer in concrete blocks, it is now determined ultimately by genetics and given benchmarks along a Sims lifetime. So Sims have the capacity to be incredibly mature for their age, or vice versa, in both the mental and physical aspects.
- Aspirations based on personality -- Built off the Sims 2 Aspiration System, but complimented with the Sims 3 personality system, Sims with given personalities will strife to have their lives a given way.
- Voices -- Your Sims now have voices, which are determined by genetics and the shape of their vocal chords in a manner very similar to Spore.
- Seamless Community -- Like the Sims 3, the entire village is seamless. Furthermore, you build the town in a manner exactly mimicking that of SimCity 4 in regards to infrastructure, plumbing, electricity etc. As well as regarding the patchwork of towns that make up your SimNation.
- Gentrification and Decay -- The net aspiration levels of the town determine the feel of the town. Towns with higher levels experience gentrification and nice events. While towns with levels in the red experience more insidious crimes and so forth.
That's basically the idea I've got in mind.

Pathos-
I think that what you have in mind is great. I however disagree with the graphics being 2D.
Many games use 3D graphics. By not having 3D in The Sims, we wouldn't be at the forefront of the computing world. I believe that we can achieve 3D graphics without needing to have supercomputers to run the game. People play the game for the graphics and the simulation. They find the game fun and entertaining. The 3D may not seem like such a big deal to people playing, but it it weren't for some of the graphics, I don't think as many people would play.
It is like playing The Sims 2 vs. The Sims 1. Most people play The Sims 2 for the graphics and the options. We are very challenging people, and are hard to please. I just don't think that options would overrule graphics.

i dont see what the point of having like seamless aging is if the graphics arent good... you wont be able to tell what your sim looks like

I appreciate your ideas, Pathos, however the graphics is a must, there's no way we could handle going back to the old 2D graphics. However, everything else is well thought out.

I Think I could live with all of that with sims 2 graohics, not sims 1.
I love the idea of net aspirations! It seems like the best way to make a run down community and a prosperous community!
