That makes sense to me, sometimes your fear rises because things aren't under your control. If you're the pilot, you're in charge. I get a little bit nervous on planes as well, although I know it's a safe way to travel. I try to sit near the emergency exit because I know that if that door needs opening, I will get it open and get out, rather than the general public freaking out and making a mess of things, which I expect would be the alternative. Also people never read the instructions until they need them whereas I like to know what I'll need to do ahead of time.

Either that or we both need to calm down, Ollie!

Oh OK. Well it would be cool to be a pilot and you'd get a nice uniform and lots of travel!

Right now I'm thinking that the guy currently trying to cut the grass at the back of my building is a fool. For starters, people are trying to sleep (not me, obviously, but plenty of others), for seconds, it's been raining for over 24 hours and the lawn is a pond (this isn't the moment to cut it!), for thirds, he's trying to mow the whole of a sizeable lawn with a strimmer... that's just for the edges, fool!

My favourite bit of flying is the zooming along the runway at take off. The bit I hate the most is the descent when my ears hurt like hell.

Have either of you played the free games Microsoft Flight or the WWI game Rise Of Flight? Good fun & incredible for freebies (the idea is you will spend money on the upgrades to make your game more fun. I wonder if they will try this with The Sims 4? Silly Minty, EA give away something for free? Derp!)

Cutting a soggy lawn with an electric strimmer - does this idiot have known suicidal tendencies?

I can't believe this time last week I'd been eating salad for three days because it was so nice. Now the heaters are back on & it's like a dank dull November!

Ah yes I love take-off! It boggles my mind that we can fly into the sky, gets me every time. I sit there dumb-struck in amazement.

Something I do not like - this business of people applauding upon landing! Seems to have developed over the last couple of years. OK, if there had been massive turbulence and the fact that the plane was safely back on the ground was a miracle, then maybe do some cheering. But otherwise, calm down people! For some reason I always end up sitting next to someone with a fear of flying - cue much hand-crushing and having to look sympathetic instead of enjoying looking at the clouds through the window - or someone travelling with a bunch of offspring - cue me acting as free childcare/climbing frame. Ollie, if you do become a pilot, I'll fly everywhere with you and then I can sit in the cabin, right?!

The lawn now looks pretty much destroyed. Strimmer man managed to cut it really short - actually he managed to rip most of what was left of the grass out of the ground. I don't know if he is suicidal, but worryingly he is a gardener by profession!

Oh and no, I don't think I have played those games. I tried something once where I was in a little spitfire and had to dodge bullets and collect something or other... but I don't remember the name of the game. I was very bad at it. It had nice jolly music though.

Here in Australia Fanny has a different meaning.

It has the same meaning over here as in Oz!

Although perhaps I ought to qualify that, the context of it being used as a word meaning a ninny comes from "Mansfield Park", specifically its main character Fanny Price who proved to be unpopular with the public for being so mousy (indeed the Famous Five's Aunt Fanny was specifically named as such as a literary joke). The "other" meaning comes from another novel, "Fanny Hill (Memoirs Of A Woman Of Pleasure".

Right now I'm thinking that, judging by the timing of that post, Minty doesn't sleep!

I find it difficult to cope when watching US TV shows in which they say fanny. The context is usually clear but it still causes me to cringe in alarm.

Also how nice to see the word 'ninny' in use.
